What is an eTA?
The Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) is an entry requirement for visa-exempt foreign nationals traveling to Canada by air. It is electronically linked to your passport and allows short stays for tourism, business, or transit. Travelers arriving by land or sea do not require an eTA.
Eligibility & Requirements
- You must be a citizen of a visa-exempt country (e.g., EU member states, UK, Australia).
- You need a valid machine-readable or biometric passport.
- The eTA is required for air travel only — not for entry by car, bus, train, or boat.
- Your stay in Canada is typically limited to 6 months per visit.
Validity & Duration
- Once approved, an eTA is valid for 5 years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first.
- It allows multiple entries into Canada during its validity period.
- Each stay cannot exceed 6 months.
Application Process
- Apply Online: Complete the short eTA form with your personal and passport details.
- Pay the Fee: A small government processing fee is required.
- Receive Authorization: Most applications are approved within minutes, though some may take a few days if documents are requested.
- Travel with Confidence: Your eTA is automatically linked to your passport and checked by airlines before boarding.
Important Notes & Restrictions
- Apply Early: Even though approval is often instant, it’s recommended to apply before booking your flight.
- Electronic Only: No paper copy is needed; the authorization is stored electronically.
- Passport Validity: Your passport must be valid for the entire duration of your stay.
- Denial: If your eTA application is refused, you must apply for a regular Canadian visa through the consulate.
