What is the United Kingdom ETA?
The United Kingdom Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) is a new digital entry permit required for travelers from eligible countries. It allows short stays in the UK for tourism, business, visiting family and friends, or transit. The ETA is electronically linked to the traveler’s passport and simplifies the entry process without the need for a visa.
Eligibility & Requirements
- Available to nationals of visa-waiver countries (e.g., USA, EU, Canada, Australia, and others).
- Applicants must have a valid biometric passport, typically valid for at least 6 months at the time of travel.
- A recent digital passport-style photo may be required.
- Travelers must apply online before their departure to the UK.
Validity & Duration
- The UK ETA is usually valid for 2 years or until the passport expires (whichever comes first).
- It allows stays of up to 6 months per visit for tourism, business, or visiting family.
- For transit, the ETA is required even if the traveler does not leave the airport.
Application Process
- Apply Online: Fill in the ETA form with personal, passport, and travel information.
- Upload Documents: A digital passport photo may be requested.
- Pay the Fee: Secure online payment is required.
- Receive Approval: The ETA confirmation is sent by email and linked to your passport electronically.
Important Notes & Restrictions
- Apply in Advance: Applications should be submitted at least a few days before travel.
- No Paper Needed: The ETA is digitally linked to the passport, but carrying a copy of the approval is recommended.
- Entry Restrictions: Employment, long-term study, or residence is not allowed with an ETA.
- No Extensions: The ETA cannot be extended or converted into another visa type.
